Roomies was the second book of Christina Lauren that I've read. The first one was Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating. And I love this so much than the first one.
My only regret was not picking up this book much sooner.
And the ending was so short, OMG I NEED MORE PLEASE.
When my friend first recommended me of this book, saying this is a marriage of convenience type of story, I picked this book as soon as I finished the last I was reading (Mhairi Mcfarlane's If I Never Met You). She also said that Holland (the main female protagonist) was similar to me, personality-wise (I didn't believe it at first but damn, shes true). It was like reading myself. Call me biased but I really think that her behavior was so much like me, not to mention I think I would react just like her in some part without a second thought. She was so relatable.
Anyway, as much as I love Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating because it was fun, and Roomies as much as I remember (correct me if I'm wrong), has a deeper conflict and angst in it. AND I LOVE IT. Also Roomies was very funny I laughed a lot in a few parts.
Holland had a crush with Calvin (a great guitarist with not so good fate until he met her) and discover that she could save her uncle's theater performance by marrying (for convenience) Calvin. From the very first, I really love their interaction. Holland was shy at first but when Calvin being all friendly and fun to her, she started to return the favor. I love their teamwork to make the marriage fraud work (for the sake of immigration), and how their pretending started to become real ones. I love reading their gestures (OMG I AM A SUCKER OF THIS, HELP). And as conflicts tested their relationship, I love how they came out stronger and even decided to make the marriage real.
I really love Holland and Calvin how they become friends and then lovers and they're so cute and fun to read! Plus OMG do I really that the sex part was hot? LOL. I also really love Calvin's Irish accent other than his personality. SERIOUSLY, where can I find Calvin???? (and my other book boyfriends)
However, I really hate Calvin when he lied to his family about (SPOILER) marrying Holland and told them she was Amanda, his ex. It hurt so much I was weeping, and Holland was being so forgiving. She only asking for a space between them is the kindest thing I've ever read in this kind of situation.
Through the book, you'll see how Holland trying to make something of herself, insecure of her own life because she was being surrounded by successful, incredible people. And her always feeling like being a supporting character even in her own life story is so relatable (is this too personal for me?). Anyway, since Holland's age was 25, I guess it's so relatable to us who is in quarter life crisis LOL.
Also!! I love how she kicked her toxic friend in the end!! YAS we all deserve happiness and kicking toxic friends is totally fine!
Anyway, as I said before, I love this better than Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating not only because it's much more relatable, but I somehow find the words in their conversations are beautiful in here.
Plus the ending, even though it's too short, I love it too much!! I can believe how much I cried in this whole book. I was only in 50% and already know I will definitely re-read this book.
I simply need more of them!!!
